The grounds are beautiful! especially in the spring with all the flowers in bloom. The chapel has magnificent sculptures and a prayerful demeanor. It is a great place to receive the sacrament of reconciliation (confession), the confessors are gifted and spiritually enlightened.
When I was little, I never wanted to go on the grounds, because I could not understand why it was so quiet and so dull. Now after living a while longer, I welcome the sense of peace that comes over you when you enter anywhere on the grounds. Going in to just sit, walk or even read, you feel a sense of belonging. I know that it is my most favorite spot in the world, an I have to go back a lot more times.
This is the best place to go 3 seasons out of the year (spring, summer, and fall). Springtime is the best. Best of all, it's free, and open to the public. If you need a place to get away from it all, that is also in the city, the Franciscan Monestary grounds are the prefect place to contemplate under a tree or walk among the statues and beautifully landscaped grounds.
but if you are Catholic then for heaven's sake don't leave it off your list of must see in DC. There are beautiful works of art, a grotto, and relaxing gardens. Mass welcomes all.
When do I get my Mazda, zoom, zoom, zoom ... ? It was great along with all the monuments, museums, and other historical places in our Nation's capitol. There is definitely no other place like it ... the best subway system too. It's clean and efficient and reliable.

I have been to the Franciscan Monastery numerous times, and I can't get enough of it. I even take my fifth-graders every year. The gardens around the Monastery are beautiful.
