gorgeous hiking but difficult at parts. i liked that there was more rock to climb over than other hiking "paths". I am excited to go back and hike up than down the other side than back up again to where i park my car. you gotta go to az. to hike the mountains around scottsdale!

parking was scarce, get there early. camelback is a "secret" around scottsdale. natives would rather have the tourist go to squaw peak. i traveled there 5 yearas before finding camelback and now i will go back every year! It can be a dangerous hike both up and down if your not careful. one may have to go slow.

Best urban hike in U.S.!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/08/06
This is the ultimate morning or afternoon urban outdoor workout.
Close to the center of the city, you can park and walk/hike/scramble to the top in about an hour if you're in average good shape, and half that if you're a freak.
The views of the Phoenix valley are awesome, but the best part is just the feeling of moving up the side ...
Camelback is a great morning hike! Ive been living in Tempe for about 2 months and have already hiked the Echo Summit trail at least 10 times. I do it in about 40 minutes to the top which is a pretty good pace. On the way down in the dark I did encounter a rattle snake on the trail so yes they are out there. But YES the hike is great, bring water and good shoes. Have fun.

challenging hike with a great view

Awesome workout and you can't beat the value(free). If you have to do this in the summer, plan to do it before sunrise. A must-do for active adults while in Phoenix.
Oh man what a morning! I went with a woman that stops by my office frequently. I am not fat by any means but apparently I am pretty out of shape! I am right at 168 lbs and 6' tall. By the time we got 3/4 of the way up I was dripping like I had just stepped out of the pool. Although she is in great shape, she was very accomodating even ...
Most beautiful views, lots of shopping outside of phoenix and places to dine! If you can stand 100 degree temperature in the summer than your in for a treat!
This is an awsome hike, the best you can find, its in a GREAT location close to town (right in the middle) and if you are a young and fit like i am (19) you can climb this in a matter of minutes, i can make it to the top useing eather trail (front or back) in under 20 minutes. now i practly run the trail, a great way to get a workout, and have a great time, the view at the top is well worth the time and effort to hike up it!
I am 5'10'' tall, 190 lbs, and about 2 lbs overweight by military standards, and I think that I lost about 15 lbs (yeah right), on this hike, but dont let that scare you. This was A MOST REWARDING HIKE. At a quarter mile, the steps had ended, and I was relieved, because the views were spectacular, and they only got better with time. ...

Have to go back!

Hiking Camelback was our favorite part of visiting Phoenix. We hiked to marker #17 on the Cholla Trail. Great exercise, beautiful views and a great time to spend with a loved one. We want to go back to make it to the summit. It's not Everest, but the accomplishment is still the same.

Camelback Mountain hike
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/18/05
The hike trailhead is easy to find, parking is limited. The trail starts out deceptively easy, and quickly funnels you into step boulder laden incline that requires you to hold onto a steel pipe (hand rail). Beautiful views and dramatic desert colors abound. We enjoyed the clear cool crisp breezes (November) and areas (after 3PM) shaded by ...
