The Vulcan is great but it's really not that spectacular. The Vulcan Center was very nice and informative and the surrounding area is really pretty. The best part of Vulcan Park for me was riding to the top of the Vulcan in the glass elevator and seeing the city from up there.
I used to always run near the Vulcan on the trails and it was so fascinating to see all this history right in front of me. I toured the museum and it was fun. I got read about who the Vulcan was. There is this skyline you can sit in to view the work of art.
Very cool place to hang with your family and friends...
This is a great place to go see the city of Birmingham and learn about the city of Birmingham. No Birmingham tourist/visitor should leave the city w/o visiting the Vulcan. I recommend not going on a cold or on a windy day - specially if you are afraid of heights. The Vulcan is 124 ft tall and you are looking straight down at 100 ft or so from the highest point. Just FYI...for all you height challenged people like me.
I love, love, love Vulcan both in the daytime and nighttime. However, couples tend to go there after sundown, and makes the place not so ideal for families with younger children. It's an ideal place to have family picnics especially on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. In addition, it is ONLY $3 to enter the park at night and is very much worth it.
We loved this unique landmark! The trip to the observation deck & the museum are worth the $6 entry fee (they offer a AAA discount as well). I have a fear of heights but as long as you look straight out instead of down through the grate decking you can enjoy the magnificent view of Birmingham. Your entry fee also allows you to return after dark ...
I wen't there several times as a kid with my family. I'm looking forward to seeing what the restoration has done for this wonderful piece of Alabama history.
This is a wonderful place to take your kids. My sons are thrilled everytime we visit. There is a little cafe on the lower level. We did not go there (it was closed for a wedding reception) but it looked very quiant.
