When under the bridge in a gondola, when you go into the Doge palace you can go across this bridge it leads to the prison thats why its call the bridge of Sighs. I paid 11 or 12 euro for the palace tour. it was well worth it can miss this atteaction.

The Bridge of Sighs. (Ponte de sospiri) Called that since the little window onthe bridge is the last time prisoners saw the outside before crossing the bridge from the court house to the prison. Guards would hear them sigh as the looked out for the last time. Truely unique.

  • The bridge and its surroundings

It's one of those little architectural details that make you feel the place you're visiting. Opposite to it is the shore that faces the third venecian island, so not only the bridge is nice, but the whole context.

The only fully covered bridge in Venice. You can take a tour and see this in person, but I saw it from a gondola ride underneath it. Fascinating! Our gondola driver/guide told us about it. It was a bridge that use to lead to a prison. The last look out to the world for many of the prisoners was through the windows in this bridge. Then many would serve life sentences. Lots of history! It is by St marks Square area and Harry's Pub too.
