When we visited the "Steps" in June of 2005, my wife and I expected to see flowers and open stairways just like the photos always highlighted. What we actually saw were gypsies selling sunglasses and handbags on bedsheets all over the place (hard to walk around them or to take a photo of the location - so I bought a postcard), no flowers ...

A waste of time
By Mugs, 11/16/05
While these steps are beautiful, they are just steps. There's nothing exciting about walking up or down them. And the thousands of tourists that flock to this site are another strike against it. The Spanish Steps are too touristy and provide an unsafe feeling.
Save your time in Rome for better sites, like the Colesseo and Fontane di Trevi. Better yet, check out San Pietro.

babbington's tea room
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/14/05
We visit each and every time in Rome to soak up the atmosphere and buy their extraordinary tea blend to take back with us to New York. One of the great places in the world to have tea and worth every penny.

Too crowded!
By buyhenn, 09/26/05
The Spanish steps is a place that I would not make another trip too. Cool to see once, but the shops, people and overall crowded conditions makes this place not worth the trouble.
Maybe this is just a current problem, but the Spanish steps were quite disappointing. Besides the construction and renovation going on all over the place, the people around the steps were rather rood and very unpleasant. This visit to the steps was more disappointing than the first few I had(1995, 1997, 2000, and 2001), but even still, I have ...

Gorgeous and busy
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/03/05
We approached from the top - definitely the most impressive way to see it for the first time. Georgeous and chaotic. The world's largest McDonald's is right down the street, important to know when travelling with a toddler! :)

A must see
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/09/05
The Spanish steps are worth the time to see them, but plan other things as this won't take much longer than 30 minutes. The piazza is filled with expensive stores and pizzarias, motorbikes and a surplus of people. Great view from the top of the steps though.

The best medicine for the weary traveler
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/02/05
This is the first place I walked to while in Rome. While some say that the one hundred year old Babbington's Tea house isn't worth the price, they are wrong. After a strike at our layover, having high tea at Babbington's was the best snack for a weary traveler, just enough food and drink to calm a queasy stomach and help settle you into the experience that is Rome. Note: the tea house is closed on Tuesdays.
