  • Must See
    By anthony s, 02/05/09
This is described as the only Catholic synagogue in the world because of its ornate interior. The only other ornate I have visited is the Moorish temple in Prague, The Great Synagogue is a stark contrast to the austere examples in Krakow and as such should be visited while in Budapest. The history of Judaism in Hungary during the life of the congregation spanning Nazism, Communism and Democracy is of great interest.

  • A Must See in Budapest
    By Jerry Gammon, 05/17/08
After riding past the Great Synagogue several times, it was a great joy to get to tour it on my 9th day in Budapest. The admission is reasonable and the ability to have an English language tour by a very knowledgeable guide made the experience even better.

The beauty and appointments of the inside of the restored synagogue are fabulous. The ...

  • Great Synagogue
    By Slade, 01/27/08
I have never been to a synagogue before and this was quite a humbling experience knowing all that went on during World War II in Hungary and the surrounding areas. I would recommend you to go just if you want to see a part of history.

  • #1 undiscovered tourist attraction in Budapest
    By Anna, 04/11/06
The synogogue, I believe, is the largest in Europe, and it's the most beautiful one I've seen yet. Fortunately, not too many travelers visit it, so it's not touristy in the least bit. Admission is free, although there might be a charge to get into the adjacent museum.

  • Simply gorgeous

The architecture on this landmark is stunning. Though it does not need to be your main stop in the day, do at least go to marvel at the exterior. Gorgeous.

  • Jewish Synagogue and Museum an emotional roller coaster
    By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/13/04
The Synagogue and Jewish Museum of Budapest will mean different things to different people. You may wish to visit here for the architecture and history, this alone would be well worth the admission. But for many ( myself included ) it's an emotional roller coaster filled with joy, memories, pain, and in 1944-tragidy.
