I have visited this shrine twice now, and had two very different experiences. The first visit was on a weekday morning in the Spring. There were few people around as we walked through the extensive grounds and viewed the shrine itself. We purchased an Ema (votive tablet) for 500 yen (about $5), and wrote a prayer on it, and hung it outside the ...

Don't go out of your way....

It may be one of the most sacred shrines, but not as intimate or as interesting as many others. Imposing torii. However, there are some interesting sights within walking distance at Harajuku and Yoyogi Koen.

Worth Checking Out
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/29/05
If you're going to Tokyo to check out the shrines and temples, you're in the wrong city. But, if you're already there Meiji-jingu is worth checking out. The walk to the shrine is a nice wide path through the woods that takes you under a couple of large torii.
The shrine itself is a fairly recent reconstruction of the original and hardly compares to the buildings you will see if you travel to Kyoto or Kamakura.

Serenity

If there is a title for the most serene spot in Tokyo, this could be it. It's the opposite of the capitalistic fervor surrounding Sensoji (Asakusa). The huge mon (gate) leads you into the cool, calm grounds with large trees surrounding you. There's not a whole lot to see beyond the simple shinto architecture but there's a good chance ...

I was very impressed with this place. I went there once recently, and it was a great experience. After you get off of the subway, you walk towards Yoyogi Park and just before the entrance to the park, you turn right and you'll see this huge gateway which is entrance to the path to the shrine. This first gateway stands on these huge pillars made ...

Meiji Jingu and surrounds
By MIchael Jones, 07/20/07
THe shrine itself is fairly impressive, but the whole area is worth a visit. From nearby Harajuku station, a weekend mecca for young (and weird) Tokyoites, the shrine is a 10 minute walk. Fanning out from here towards Omotesando are a large variety of shops and restaurants. The oreiental bazaar is THE best shop in Tokyo to grab a souvenir. In the ...

The Meiji shrine gives a person in Tokyo someewhat a breather from the large buildings and the hussle and bussle. It is however crowded with many people. However the shrine remains clean and is free.

Worth Seeing

If you want a hands-on experience of Japanese culture and religion - this is the place to do it. You can take part in the cleansing ritual and even participate in the traditional prayer. You'll see beautiful landscape and many Japanese women and girls in traditional kimono dress. You may even stumble upon a wedding!
