Tennoji zoo labours under two difficulties: its entrance fee, and the attitudes of westerners (who, for our part, are in the right).
For ¥500 you can get into a zoo with a pretty impressive list of exhibits. You get what you pay for, and complaining about the amenities only demonstrates your ignorance of economics, and the often difficult ...
After reading the negative reviews we almost did not go to the zoo. Lucky we did make the time to go. The animals are kept in very good condition. The holding areas are clean and well kept. One thing I noticed is the city must have cut some funding on landscape staff, because some garden areas were left untrimmed. I suggest for all the people leaving a negative feedback they donate extra money to the city so they can make some needed repairs.
The area, Tennoji, is possibly the poorest area in Osaka, stricken by poverty, laden with filthy advertisements, and home of the Tennoji Zoo. The facilities at this zoo are frightening and are analogous to the living conditions of a third-world country. This is where they have endangered animals living out their short lives. The animals are ...

A sad place for animals
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/15/08
I wouldn't recommend this place at gunpoint. This is a dangerous place for animals to live, because of the unsanitary conditions. We came for a pleasant daytrip, and left out of disgust. We saw a polar bear stressfully pacing around his dirty environment, the endangered orangutan looking unhealthy and unkempt, and swans whose feathers were ...
I went there while on vacation in Osaka with some friends. The ticket was only 500yen (about US$5.00), and was worth every penny; and more.
You can get super close to the animals, while remaining safely behind the cages. There are all sorts of animals there that you can't see in any American zoos. You don't even need to know Japanese to ...

Some good, some bad
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/05/07
The chimp and other primate enclosures are a disgrace. There is a lot of reserach to show what these animals need. Certainly the chimps and orangutans looked ill and distressed.
The newer reptile and amphibain exhibition was excellent.
This zoo needs an over hall. In the 21st Century these are places of education, not just random collection ...

If you want to feel depressed
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/22/07
One of the worst zoos i've been too. Animals bathed and swam in swamp-like filthy water, cages were small and above all it was crowded. Wouldn't go back, wouldn't take my kids.

Go for the gardens! They're stunning!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 04/12/05
I enjoyed the zoo alot. It was a lot of fun to visit. Some of the animals could be better maintained, but those conditions where I noticed the neglect were few. The people were a very friendly, and everyone was very helpful. This is a good place to visit on a warm (but not hot) day, as the gardens surrounding the zoo are stunning. It's definately worth the trip.
