Though appearing in every guidebook you can find, I went there with a few Shanghainese and none of us were impressed with the place. The ambiance isn't bad; dark wood and a little more formal than most places, but the food was mediocre and the service average. There are much better places in town to get Shanghainese food, and at much better prices.

Really Traditional

This is the real place. A traditional Chinese restaurant of high standing. Whenever I am back in Shanghai it is a must to go at least once there. I have brought many times groups of bankers there and they always loved it. It is real Shanghainese food, not adapted to Westerns, but that's what it make authentic. Here is China!
P.S. All real places in China are good with kids, since Chinese love kids.

unless you like the novelty of dining in a restaurant where the French president has been..

Food is $$$$ & not to our taste buds. Took foreigners there & they don't like it either... But it's a traditonal Chinese old building, so unless you want to go because of that...
