Its just a basic tourist destination that offers little but where most will go to say they have been there. A monument and a painted line, little else, charge $2 to enter, another $3 to go into the museum. If you need to say you've been there its okay, otherwise, find something else to do (anything).

This attraction is very much for tourists, and is on the road to the mist forist, only 10Km further on, where the film "proof of life was filmed".

We cant wait to go back
By A Yahoo! Contributer, 09/23/07
My girlfriend lives in Ecuador so I went to stay with her and her family there. While I was there for a month I went to the middle of the world monument. I thought it was a cool place to visit. It had beautiful views and the museum on the inside of the monument was nice. There are many great stores where you can buy many things. I am going back in May with her and I hope to visit the monument again.

A Must
By A Yahoo! Contributer, 05/29/07
Sure it is probably the most touristy thing you can do while in Ecuador, but a trip to La Mitad del Mundo is an experience you will never forget, and the picture opportunities are priceless. The tour is interesting, but in some ways forgettable, likely would depend on your tour guide.

Being born and raised in Ecuador, one can not tell you how exciting it is to visit this wonderful monument. The museum you see on your way up to the mail mirador is very educational and does give one a sence of stepping back in time. Do give yourself the time to visit La Mitad del Mundo as i guarantee you will not regret it and I do guarantee you will keep a memory that will last you a lifetime!

they fake the swirling water demo
By A Yahoo! Contributer, 02/20/07
Great place to visit, a don't-miss. But even the guides who do the demo will admit that they deliberately pour the water into the basic from one side, then when they do it again "across the equator" they fill the basin from the opposite side, setting up a small current, which is what really makes the water swirl one way or the other. ...

Well worth visiting
By A Yahoo! Contributer, 05/25/06
It was wonderful to go atop the monument that sits on the equator---there are shops & restaurants in the area. You would think that it would be hot but since you are at such a high altitude the temps are plesant.

The real Equator!
By A Yahoo! Contributer, 05/05/06
I went to La Mitad del Mundo as part of my "Quito City Tour" with Grayline Tours. It is an awesome place that incorporates interactive activities with seeing a cool place.
The tour costs $2 USD and includes a guide who shows you artifacts and traditional Ecuadorian items as well as the Equatorial line. When you're on the Equator, ...

Be sure to check out the real equator
By Kara G, 04/12/06
This is a neat place, but they built it on the wrong spot! There is a great little museum a couple of blocks away where the REAL equator is! Ask for directions anywhere outside (in front of) El Mitad Del Mundo. At the real equator, you can see some nifty demonstrations of how water flows in the northern and southern hemisphere and on the equator, and you can balance an egg on a nail.

Middle of the World

Mitad del Mundo is a tourist attraction to be sure. One can stand and straddle the equator here and while it is exciting, unless you can concieve your position on the globe, it isn't very thrilling. It is not very expensive and has lots of shops with good prices on everything from vegetable ivory carvings to blowguns and silver jewelry. The ...
