Its just a basic tourist destination that offers little but where most will go to say they have been there. A monument and a painted line, little else, charge $2 to enter, another $3 to go into the museum. If you need to say you've been there its okay, otherwise, find something else to do (anything).

Be sure to check out the real equator
By Kara G, 04/12/06
This is a neat place, but they built it on the wrong spot! There is a great little museum a couple of blocks away where the REAL equator is! Ask for directions anywhere outside (in front of) El Mitad Del Mundo. At the real equator, you can see some nifty demonstrations of how water flows in the northern and southern hemisphere and on the equator, and you can balance an egg on a nail.

Mitad del Mundo is a tourist attraction to be sure. One can stand and straddle the equator here and while it is exciting, unless you can concieve your position on the globe, it isn't very thrilling. It is not very expensive and has lots of shops with good prices on everything from vegetable ivory carvings to blowguns and silver jewelry. The ...

Well worth visiting
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/25/06
It was wonderful to go atop the monument that sits on the equator---there are shops & restaurants in the area. You would think that it would be hot but since you are at such a high altitude the temps are plesant.

they fake the swirling water demo
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/20/07
Great place to visit, a don't-miss. But even the guides who do the demo will admit that they deliberately pour the water into the basic from one side, then when they do it again "across the equator" they fill the basin from the opposite side, setting up a small current, which is what really makes the water swirl one way or the other. ...

A must see site. . .
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/20/04
I lived in Ecuador for three months and my trip to Mitad del Mundo was one of the highlights. Be sure to visit Mital del Mundo, but also walk a few steps to the north and visit the real equator as found by GPS after the big monument was constructed.

Ecuador - what a country!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/03/05
The Mitad del Mundo is a very exciting place and really well worth a visit!! However, instead of going in the main site, turn right along the road just before the entrance and walk for a little bit until you find the real equator (by GPS) and a fantastic museum where you can balance an egg on a nail and actually watch water change direction of ...

Mitad del Mundo
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/14/05
Mitad del Mundo is probably the most accessible place in the world where you can stand in two hemispheres at the same time, and actually doing it is more exciting than you might think. The equator is not the only thing to see at Mitad del Mundo, there are also dozens of stores where you can buy interesting souvenirs with Ecuador, Quito or Mitad del ...

The real Equator!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/05/06
I went to La Mitad del Mundo as part of my "Quito City Tour" with Grayline Tours. It is an awesome place that incorporates interactive activities with seeing a cool place.
The tour costs $2 USD and includes a guide who shows you artifacts and traditional Ecuadorian items as well as the Equatorial line. When you're on the Equator, ...
