In no other urban setting can you see such a natural phenomenon (you have to go to a batcave out in the boonies, which is inconvenient, to see so many bats in flight), and, best of all, it's absolutely free!

Holy Poop Batman!

Watching the bats leave the Congress Steet Bridge is something everyone should see in their lives. But make sure you bring an umbrella if you want to get close. Those aren't rain drops that are falling on your head!
Its an amazing experience seeing literally millions of mexican freetail bats fly out from the bridge forming what looks like smoke streams in the sky.Its cheap (taking the cruise ) or free standing on Congress brdge or nearby
I remember going to watch the bats under the Congress bridge when I was really young. It was so fascinating, I recall just absolutely loving it. I've been meaning to go back for a long time, now that I'm older, and watch it again. It doesn't cost anything so it's certainly easy on the budget. I would recommend it to anybody really, it is just an experience you'll not soon forget.

Very cool experience

It isn't very often that you have the oppurtunity to visit the largest urban bat colony in the United States. In fact, it most likely doesn't cross most peoples minds. The view is magnificent on the river, there are tons of people watching at dusk, and downtown looks gorgeous. It is simply a really cool thing to experience.

Bats!

It is an amazing sight! A nice outing at no cost. If your visiting in the Austin area you dont want to miss it. Remember...there are no such things as vampires!
How unique is this? Where in the world can sit at TGIF, eat dinner, watch bats come flying out of the bridge! The amazing thing is how Austin has embraced this tradition and made it something that is worth seeing. A great blend of environment and people. Kids learn how beneficial it is to have the bats because of how many bugs they eat... now that's worth a bunch of bats in the belfry!

Don't look up!

This is a great place to witness the evening feeding exodus of the Mexican Freetail bat colony. Some people like to be down along the banks to view the exit. I prefer to be up on the bridge watching the bats fly east over the top of the Colorado River. And it's FREE!
No, not that kind of bat. These are Mexican fruit bats and at sundown, this is the most awesome sight you will see in Austin. All of these bats descend out from under the bridge and whiz right past ya. A must see!
