We pre-purchased our tickets at our hotel to avoid a long ticket line at the building, but all the lines at the building are long!! We waited in lines well over an hour on a Sunday afternoon and were optimistic that once we got outside the views would be worth it, but they allow so many people out there that we were still 3-4 people deep on the ...

King Kong's favorite building
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/19/06
Yes, you may have to stand in line for up to an hour to take the elevator to the observation deck, but it is still worth it. For skyscrapers buff like me, this is paradise - experiencing the sights and sounds of the world's greatest city from the top of the city's tallest and most famous building. Best time to go is probably in the evening, ...

Living on the go...

I loved being able to see the Empire State Building! What an experience. This was several yrs ago so we didnt have to deal with the heightened security. No waits for the elevator or any problems getting to the top. I can remember I freaked Andrew out as I was trying to look over. What a fun memorable moment!

There is an alternative

Yes, you waste a lot of time in line. New York's too fabulous to waste time. I suggest going to "The Top of the Rock" at Rockefeller Center. Newly refurbished and a 360 unobstructed view on three levels. Timed entries available and shorter lines. Plus, you can see the Empire State Building!!

Ground level it was half sunny half overcast. Make sure it's sunny when you go. If you have kids with you it would be a good idea to take them on the virtual ...

I preferred Top of the Rock, but with pre-booked tickets and a sunset over the city, the Empire State Building is essential to anyone visiting New York City.

Memories

Even though we live in a big city we were impressed with this building , the view from the top. It will always be a part of a very enjoyable memory
Going to the Empire State Building at night was the very first thing my wife and I wanted to do when we got to New York. So that night, we took a nice stroll, arriving at the building about 8:00 pm. The sign at the bottom said, "10-15 minute wait", so we figured it'd be perfect.
After we waited a half-hour in the Disney theme-park ...
