Magnificent setting
By blueyedblonde, 06/15/08
The real show here is the magnificent setting, the beautiful building, and the special exhibits--not the permanent collection. The special exhibits have been exquisite. I recently saw the Marie Antoinette exhibit, and the Vivienne Westwood exhibit. I plan to see the 4 Women Impressionists soon. I've been to museums all over this country, ...

magical walk
By NotchoMama, 11/30/07
My aunt took me here nearly 40 years ago. We never went inside, we walked the grounds...I frequently dream of the sculptures and the park setting, so close to the ocean and sutro ruins....I am planning a trip in '08, to bring my hubby and kids. My heart can't wait!

Legion Tour
By marthaa, 04/02/07
Youth curiosity and exploration did not feel encouraged despite the fact that the students were eager to learn more. It would have been very helpful to have staff explaining style and the time period of the artist to better understand how that played into the style. However, the value of the art itself was amazing. Very impressive content.

Great art and outdoor views
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/15/07
Great art at the Legion of Honor, and the outside architecture with a mixture of nature! Go for a walk, relax in the grass and enjoy the sun! Not far away are many other outdoor activities to do as well. Outdoor activities with some history, city views, ocean views and golfing...right next door.

Motorcycle Ride in the City
By Shadow_Walker, 01/13/07
I didn't go into the museum, but it was an excellent motorcycle ride past the Golden Gate along the coast and a great chance for some fantastic photography outside the building.

Great Art, Good Photo Opportunity!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/04/06
I really loved the setting for this building; beautiful location overlooking the Bay and ocean. And set in the Presidio, so the landscaping is really nice. The building is a beautiful piece of architecture and I enjoyed the photo opportunity that afforded. The paintings and sculptures; as well as period rooms, furniture and pottery are varried ...

By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/06/06
ok i agree with all the previous reviewers' comments about the second or third city status of the permanent collection, BUT the Monet in Normandy exhibition is so spectacular, you all should go see it now!!! After being blown away by the beauty, depth and just painterly qualities of this 60 canvas show, i wandered upstairs and was equally ...

Where are the philanthropists?
By dandominikjoseph, 12/26/05
Like most SF museums, the Palace of the Legion of Honor is over-hyped (although thankfully, it is not as over-hyped as the SFMOMA). It has a decent collection, but it really falls far short of my hometown Art Institute of Chicago. I agree with the user from Paris that San Francisco's art mavens really should get their act together to turn this into a world-class museum.

Pretty good museum
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/05/05
The collection of this museum is fine. As other reviewers have noted, masters from Fra Angelico, Rembrandt, and Rubens, to Monet, Degas, and Van Gogh are represented in the collection of the California Palace of the Legion of Honor.
However, for the principal non-American art museum of a city that has a very big head about its own artistic ...
