Alcatraz Island is great for anyone interested in history, or anyone who likes tourist attractions. They have self-guided tours, with or without a headset. You go through the cells (where you can see Al Capone's old cell), the cafeteria, and all over the island. The only cost that I can remember is the ferry ride to the island. The headset-tours cost extra, and of course, there are gift shops on the island.

I loved it
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/30/05
I took my boyfriend and it was great. They had a tour with earphones that translated the historic background on Alcatraz and the inmates. And plus the fairy ride, well worth the money. They let you in the hole with other people for about 5-10 seconds. I loved it.
We enjoyed the weather.People were friendly and helpful.There were many homeless people on the streets which was disconcerting.Lots of people had dogs but did clean up after them.Our favorite thing was a ghost tour with a guy named Jim.We were disappointed in the Chinese food though.The shoopping was great.The archetecture was incredible.We loved ...
I really enjoyed the history and authenticity of Alcatraz. I've been twice in the last five years and would go again. San Fran is one of my favorite cities and Alcatraz is a great part of it!

On island tour
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/27/05
I went on the island on a tour and found it to be really interesting. I also meet a man that was in Alcatraz he turned his life around. the audio tour was great I never got to finish it so we are going back. it is a prison but is part of history and for me interesting.
Alcatraz makes San Francisco unique and contributes greatly to the overall Bay Area experience for tourists. No other prison in America is as famous as this former home to the likes of Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly.
I got to see what the inside of a real prison looks like, how it would've felt to be an inmate there and I got to see a great view of San Francisco and walk around where a movie was filmed.

Recreating the historical context of an island jail.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/26/05
PROS: ====
-Well maintained and preserved. -The feel of being in a historical jail, old enough to be very interesting. -It was featured in the movie, "The Rock." -It takes a nifty boat ride to get there, adding yet another interesting element to the trip. -Having the water surround you, and walking around the cells creates a ...
