You get to be part of "History". Don't expect an amusement park, just remeber your walking on History. I really enjoyed it and have been there four times. It's really worth the money, make sure to get your tickets way in advance and to get the optional audio guide, they have it in tons of languages too.

Prison Break

Take a leisurely cruise out to Alcatraz from Pier 39 on the Blue & Gold Line. Ticket includes admission for as long as you like (until park closing) and the audio tour. It is a bit depressing to see how these criminals lived back in the 30's, but also interesting if you've never been to prison for real. On the ride over and back, you can appreciate why noone was confirmed to have escaped. Bring a jacket!

Nice ferry ride(be sure to dress warm). Once you're there, it's so full of history, you can't get help but get taken back in time.

It may seem a little pricey at first, but if you buy tickets in advance, the $18 to do this tour is well worth it. You get great views of the bays, an excellent audio tour, and even do the jailhouse rock if you'd like. Don't miss it. (And remember to take food/water with you to the island).

Like stepping back in time

Before leaving on our trip, we had an Alcatraz movie night with a double feature. Bird Man from Alcatraz and Escape from Alcatraz. We wanted our kids to know what they were visiting. We caught the early ferry and stayed until after lunch. I highly recomend renting the headsets on the island. With those on, you really feel like you have gone ...
I really enjoyed the trip out to Alcatrz island. Very interesting. Being with a group of military personnel, we were given a private tour and allowed to go up inside the old lighthouse. I strongly recommend anyone going to the San Fransisco area to check this out.
