Went to San Fran to visit friends and made it a point to see Alcatraz. It was well worth it. All the history, and stories related to this unique place were extremely interesting. There is an audio tour, make sure you spend the extra few bucks for this or you'll miss out on a lot of interesting stories. The audio tour also point out specific cells for Capone, The Bird Man, etc.

I love this i went with my mom and dad to this place and the tour was great. My mom and dad used the headphones to do the tour and i just walked around. It was nice to take the tour on ur own.I can't remember if it cost anything or not it has been a while since i have been there.
But it was worth all the time to go and see it here. I love learning about new things.

This is the best attraction in San Francisco. Don't miss this trip. Ferry ride was beautiful. Evening tour is the best. Can't wait to go back.
Even if you have already been to this amazing place before, it is exciting to go more than once. I have visited this attraction twice over the past eight years. If you can, opt for the full tour package, which gives you the use of a Walkman-style tape recorder to wear as you walk through the prison. On the tape recorder, you will be guided in a ...
I loved this place. You really get a feel of life on the island. To close your eyes while in the cell and just listen to the tape as it plays, WOW! I would go again and again. There was an ex-inmate there when I was there and he told the most amazing stories. Great place to take the kids and getting them excited about learning a little american history.
We liked taking the boat over to see the prison. We didn't have advanced tickets and we were only going to be there a couple of days. We went to Salsalito instead. It is a sweet little island. We were able to pass the prison up close on the way to the island and it was cool. We really like the island lots of cute shops and my husband found a cool bookstore the only one there. Coffee shop and a few eaterys are there too.

its an all day event
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/20/05
i went for a school field trip years ago. it was fun but its an all day event and only go if thats what you planned for. because if you just decide to go when you get there, you might not get fairy tickets, you also might not have enough time for other things you might have planned to do.

Very informative especially the audio tour. Make sure you have warm clothing. Try and book middle of day due to sea fog. Good family excursion.
Walking through Alcatraz is a real trip through history. It is a remarkable experience. You can almost hear the clink of the tin utensils, the clang of the cell doors closing, the banter of the guards and prisoners. It is an exciting yet eerie place. So near to San Francisco - yet so very far for the inmates. I never get tired of seeing when out of town guests come to visit.
I loved visiting Alcatraz strangely enough. The weather in the city is ofttimes chilly and you find the need to dress warmly especially when you're by the water. I loved the shuttle boat to the island and I loved smelling the salty air that seemed to embellish itself into the walls. Arriving to the island you can see the grafiti from the ...
