I never went into this restaurant with any illusion of authentic Mexican cuisine. However, the tacky yet funky decor really makes this place. The burritos and refried beans were delicious.

I haven't been to this restaurant in a while and I don't know why. The food was always fantastic when I went previously, but I can't attest to it at present. One of the cool things about El Toreador is that you're able to wait for your seat at the bar next door, Joxer Daly's. That's a really cool arrangement, especially because the front entryway/foyer of the restaurant is tiny.

What a disappointment this birthday meal was! If you are looking for cute decor and dining in a big pinyata, this is your spot. But if you're looking for a good tostada steak salad, forget it. Tons of half cooked onions, overwhelming mounds of tri-colored peppers, iceberg lettuce, overcooked, heavily salted, dry, tough beef which buries an ...
If you crave basic refried beans and enchiladas or chimichangas in flavorful sauces, this place is worth the wait (they don't take reservations). The decor had our four year-old entranced from the moment we walked in. An explosion of bright colors, papier mache toucans and Mexican dolls in native dress greets you and surrounds you. Food is bland. Went there 3 years ago. No taste to the burritos! Thought that it might be an 'off night.' Went back last year. Bland food; skimpy portions; and nickel and dime you with the chips. Went back last week. Why? Maybe third time is the charm. Horrible food; long wait; and terrible portions (again).
If I can think of two ...

Nice neighborhood sit-down Mexican
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/16/06
Good food, good service. This place is always crowded so be prepared for a wait. They have a good beer selection, but no hard alochol (so no margaritas). This is good place to grab a bite when you're going to see a movie at West Portal.

Outstanding Mexican Food
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 04/03/06
The first thing you'll notice about this place is the amazing decor. Dolls, artwork, pictures, and cool placemats.
If there is a wait, you can go to the pub next door and they will call you when your table is ready.
This was, by far, the best Mexican food I've ever had. I got two mole enchiladas with chicken. The salsa provided with the chips was also great.
The food was authentic mexican & delicious. You will love the fun atmosphere. Visually fun for children of all ages. The service was friendly. I definately will go back every chance I get.
