very retro hip place- closely fashioned after the 20's speak-easys- without trying too hard to be hip. Decor is also decked in a dark steak house looking wood grain. Certainly a stylish addition to SF nightlife/restaurants. Drinks were a bit overpriced- but thats expected. No great kudos to bartenders or serving staff either (outfits and style remind one of the Tadich Grill), but maybe thats part of the shtick.
Neat location, and unique set up. Great food and service. Good wine selection. Fun place to visit in SF. Highly recommend.

Great food and ambiance

It's hidden, but wow, when you get into Bix, it's just the coolest thing inside. Not to mention, the drinks are great. I had the Kobe beef steak when I was there. Talk about to die for. I'd definitely recommend this place.
Off an alley in the old "barbary coast" district, noted only by a neon sign hanging down the old brick building with the letters "BIX" and a blinking blue note, you enter into another time. The decor is understated and tasteful. The long bar against the wall is tended by tenured bartenders who will pour the best Martini in SF. ...
There is only one bad thing I can say about this place; "it's a little expensive". Since that's out of the way, I can tell that this is one of my favorite restaurants. Everything about it is great. Its "secret spot" type location and ambiance are wonderful. It feels like you're stepping into a speakeasy in the ...

Beautiful, stylish, but stuffy

This place is breathtaking upon entry, with its vaulted ceilings and mountains of ice upon which sit large martini glasses... but my well-dressed, baseball-hat wearing friend was asked to remove his chapeau, and that really chafed my hide. We were in the bar section, drinking scotch, and this is California! People should be allow to wear baseball caps and drink scotch in a nice bar. My opinion.

Excellent date/singles location
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/09/04
From the crowd to the lighting to the food, it's all perfect. If you're in the mood for some top of the line food in a romantic atmosphere and you don't mind the prices, this is a great place. Hidden in a North Beach Alley, this restaurant is a find. For singles wanting to meet professionals, the bar is ideal. For couples wanting to enjoy the music, food, and romance, the restaurant is perfect. Highly recommend to anyone.
