My review from a previous travel website is below. I feel strongly about this place and think the negative reviews are off base.
Recently went on vacation to Napa, but decided to spend two days in Monterey / Big Sur before flying home. We went to Nepenthe for the sunset views but soon realized the food wasn't quite the style or price we ...

I will never, ever set foot in this place again.
We arrived promptly at dinner and stood waiting to be seated for 15-20 minutes. When we did get seated we waited another 5-10 minutes for a menu, and then another long wait for service for drinks and then food orders.

I really didn't like it at all, food was lacking and it was expensive.
small piece of underspiced meat for the entree left a horrible taste in the mouth and a hole in the pocket
Latin/California mix is not something I have ever seen work before.
drinks were bad too, warm beer = inexcusible.

Well done casual place, a little busy
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/20/05
A great Saturday night casual dining experience for your Big Sur weekend. Only 4 stars instead of 5 because the food was good but not superior, and the excess of little kids got on my nerves a little. Lots of patio dining, and it backs up to the river. There is a small bar and the food is a cross between 'american' with steaks, chicken, salads, and Californian with some interesting flair.
