The place was cute and the service was excellent, but the sushi was just ok. The prices are very reasonable and the people who work there are really friendly. It's just disappointing when everything else about the place is so good that the sushi is just average. I will say that I only had the rolls - maybe the other menu items are better.

This place can be amazing, you just need to know what to order. All the fish is going to be local, fresh, and NEVER farmed raised. Kiyo seems to take tremendous pride in being able to identify great quality fish. While at Kiyo's I primarily went for the sashimi (tuna, yellow tail, halibut) and it was all great but nothing compared to the ...

One of the last authentic Japanese restaurants in town, I've become one of the many regulars at Kiyo's. Nothing pretentious, very comfortable relaxed atmosphere. Sushi is always fresh (gotta have the scallops!) and he makes his fried rice just like my mom! If you want delicious, home style cooking in a family type atmosphere, go to Kiyo's!

Kiyo's isn't flashy, but Kiyo knows his fish, picks it out personally every morning, takes the time to get to know regulars, and has an extremely friendly and knowledgeable staff. A great place for a date, dinner with a few friends, or even to eat alone at the sushi bar.

  • Teriyaki? or Very-yucky?
    By Jenny, 03/14/07
Me and my bf wanted to celebrate his new job, and we made the mistake of coming here. We love Japanese food but the food was way below par. The chicken didn't taste fresh, we've never got that experience from a Japanese restaurant before.

  • BADDD FOOD. pretty decor
    By angelove, 03/14/07
We ordered Chicken Teriyaki, a simple dish however the chicken was full of fat nuggets, had a rubbery texture, and was cold.
The waitress was cheerful which we appreciated, but didn't even ask if the food was good even while our plates were left untouched after tasting. The ambience is very pretty but unfortunately the cooking doesn't ...

  • A little off the beaten - but worth it
    By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/08/07
Kiyo's has been serving great sushi for 20 years. The owner frequently will personally greet his guests. The food is fresh and, according to some of Japanese friends, very authentic. My favorite is the tuna rolls. The price is reasonble, not expensive but not inexpensive. The restaurant fills up but doesn't get mobbed like some other ones do. Highly recommend it.

  • A diamond in the Rough

My boyfriend and I have been here a couple of times and both have been great. This place is a welcome change to the high maintenance restaraunts of the gaslamp. Its cute and quaint and most importantly quiet. there is no need to yell over the thump of a bass line in the background. The food is wonderful especially the jerome roll and the spicy tuna rolls (melt in your mouth). .

Ken-chan, Kyoko-san and Pius have eaten many times at Kyos. The chef is very special and prepares outstanding sushi and Japanese cuisine with great engagment. The result is faboulos. Best Sushi for reasonable price. Compliment.
We are very sad that we cannot go to Kyo now, since we had to go back to Switzerland. But we will be back soon.
    Regards,
    Pius, Kyoko and Ken
