The things locals rave about (arts scene, restaurants, nightlife) are all on par with any other city of this size (63,000). It's cheap, that's for sure, but it's VERY boring if you've spent time anywhere else or are under age 40. Pretty coastline, but you'll go crazy after a week unless the rural thing is you're scene. not ...
We travel to Mid Coast, Me often. We will make a day trip to Portland during our stays. We find it to be a great place to visit and recommend getting out to the Islands and explore. Love It!

I live here
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/29/07
I'm from New Hampshire and have lived in Maine 9 years and Portland for 7. Maine is a strange and beautiful state. It's strange because it's so poor, yet filled with old wealth, and beautiful for its coast, lakes, villages and mountains.
Maine is a social welfare state with little remaining industry; the tax situation is set up to ...

Pro's...
1. Merrill theater. Beautiful, well-kept theatre, great shows. 2. Good restaurants. There are at least seven great restaurants in the area. 3. Cute downtown area. Although you have to pick your streets. Old Port at night is terrible, don't go there alone EVER after dark. Exchange is adorable, as is Fore. That entire area in ...

a Portland hotel to avoid: Eastland Park
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/24/06
Stayed one night, Saturday Oct 21. Paid $170. 1. The hot water was uncomfortably luke warm on Sunday morning. Front desk said something was broken, and that they were fixing it, but they didn't do so in the next 30 minutes.
2. Front entrance scattered with about 150 cigarette butts, leaves, and other junk, suggesting it had not been swept ...

Great Vacation
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/19/06
My wife and I vacationed in Maine, planning to spend 1 day in Portland and drive to other cities in Maine over a week period.
We never left Portland...We spent the whole week there. We loved the Regency hotel on Milk street, the shopping, the many places to eat and just walking around. We found it very relaxing and Portland is now on our list of places we would retire at.

Loved the visit, considering a move...
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/30/06
I visited Portland in December of 2004. Yes, it was very cold but it did not detract from having a wonderful time. There are plenty of great restuarants to satisfy different tastes, unique shopping, great coastline, a walking/cycling path around the city, and of course you aren't far (30 min to an hour) from the lakes/beaches/woods for some ...

A small town in a city
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/14/06
An average small city. Safe mostly if you don't stay down in the Old Port late at night. Poor public transportation. Very very cold in the winter. Not a lot of varied cultural attractions but enough to keep busy for about a week. Thriving artist's community. Dog-friendly. Quite a few vagrants and mentally ill people dwell in the ...

Its a great walking city- there are so many great shops and restaurants. There are young and old mixed with families- everywhere. It has the best of a big city but the comfort of a small town.
