Honolulu (waikiki) Is beautiful clean city, however there were just way too many people in a small area. H-1 (the main highway) was bumper to bumper traffic wich caused long delays. Not very fun when you are in paradise. We had the most beautiful weather. The people for the most part were very friendly. If you want the full effects of Hawaii I would reccomend Maui!

Each Hawaiian island has a nickname. I think the true nick for Oahu is 'The meeting place'

Honolulu itself is a great city. Busy and bustling in paradise. Excellent restaurants, not as touristy as Waikiki and a larger mix of tourist and locals than other areas.

Honolulu is crammed with more vehicles than there are room for. If you plan on getting in or out of the city through the usual route, highway, leave a few hours to get where you want to go. Honolulu is a big city, overcrowded because so many people are in such a tiny area. Nice place to visit, but I wouldn't spend too much time, the REAL Hawaii isn't in Honolulu.

We stayed in O'ahu, Honolulu, Miami, Kona, and Hawaii in 2001 for approximately a month and it was the best experience I've ever had. We went in the off-season, stayed away from the tourist traps and rented a cabin in the mountains rainforest very cheap and drove the 10 minutes to the shore.

Honolulu is not exactly a relaxing Hawaii experience with the traffic snarls. But it's worth the visit for wonderful Waikiki. It's truly like New York city on the beach. The food options are also great. Pacific Rim cuisine is great just about anywhere in this city.
