I have family living in Fairbanks - so had the best guides in the world & saw so-o-o many things from the mountains to down town & even the University. It was great.

  • I wouldn't bother too much with Fairbanks
    By A Yahoo! Contributer, 06/25/07
The only positive to fairbanks are the gold mining tours and the riverboat discovery. Other than that, it's useful in getting to another tourist trap known as "The North Pole."

The city itself really doesn't have a "downtown." The food is basic and there just isn't much to do if there isn't a festival going ...

  • I want to go back!
    By Megin C, 03/15/07
I went to Fairbanks in August of 1994. I really enjoyed it. My mom and I took a tour of the university and the museum is a must do. If you rent a car, make sure to go to the North Pole. It's a cool Christmas everyday of the year kind of place. Afterwards, you can brag to all your friends that you went to the North Pole.

We also took the 12 ...

  • A really great place
    By A Yahoo! Contributer, 12/13/06
We have been twice, both times during February. The people are friendly, the scenery beautiful, and the cold is actually invigorating. Just don't try to drive -- it can get no-kidding icy. Plan to see the Museum of the North at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (the city bus will take you right there), and take a walk right down the middle of the frozen Chena River. I would go back tomorrow if I could.

Not enough advertising signs on the road. We thought we had passed it. Very interesting part of history You can spend 1/2 a day here looking at everything and panning for gold. I have a teenager who loved it

  • I'd love to visit again
    By A Yahoo! Contributer, 03/31/06
It's been 5 years since I visited. I had a wonderful time. When I visited, it was September and just starting to get chilly. We even saw a little snow. I enjoyed the river boat ride and buffet, and the Eldorado Gold Mine. Also the University Museum, and a smaller museum in town called the Ice Museum. Saw the Visitor's Center, the farm ...

  • Ok
    By Doug Bug, 03/13/06
The only drawbacks are you freeze your cahones off in the winter and get eaten alive by mosquitos in the summer. Other then that there is no place like it on earth.

I was there in December 05 for a couple of weeks for work at Ft. Wainwright. My first thought as I stepped off the plane was BRRRRR.... with frozen nostrils and lungs I proceded to the Fairbanks Marriot along 1st St. Very nice hotel with excellent and pleasent service. YOU MUST EAT AT Lavelle's - the hotel restaurant (tell the owner Frank I ...

  • "Lifelong Resident here!"
    By polardreamer2003, 10/27/05
I will type at random as I could type days about my home
    When you visit Fairbanks...
    Remember
the city faces darkness and extreme cold November thru....February and then March slowly brings daylight and warmer temps.
    Rustic, dusty, colorful, wild,
wide open and independant.....Fairbanks exsists only due to people choosing to live in a state ...
