Kobe is a great place to base your travels of the Kansai area, with a Shinkansen station nestled against the mountains, a central location, excellent shopping, and some of Japan's finest restaurants. You can find a wide variety of hotels, from youth hostels to business hotels to luxury suites, often at rates lower than in Kyoto or Osaka. Also, the city is an excellent place to simply walk around and get a feel for urban Japan.
