  • Old York, Old York.
    By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/11/08
York, Yorkshire. A city in the country of England, steeped in history, both of religion and transport.

Situated on the River Ouse and flanked by historic city walls, York is a delightful place to visit.

With quaint mediaeval streets, shopping areas, boat tours, railway museums, York Minster and an 'Eye' over the county town there is ...

  • Nice Place, but Touristy
    By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/22/08
York is very pretty and -- in many ways-- quintessentially English.

The people are pretty nice, too. I even had a lady who could see that I was lost and offered me directions to the train station!

The downside is that this city is awfully crowded during tourist season and some of the charm of York is negated during that time of year.

  • Visit York if you can.
    By David, 09/21/07
It's been awhile since I've been there, but I absolutely loved visiting York. I went on a week-end, and they closed the center of the city down so you could walk around easily. There were many good pubs that served great local foods.

I loved talking to the local vendors, who were friendly and very proud of their little slice of life. I ...

  • York's history is the history of England!
    By The BeachBum, 09/16/07
King George VI once said that “York's history is the history of England." Once the Roman capital of Northern England, York is encircled by 2 ½ miles of medieval stone walls. Where sentries used to walk the ramparts in days of yore, tourists walk them today. Must sees include the Minster Cathedral, the Castle Museum, Jorvik Viking ...

  • Can't beat it!
    By Nocturna, 07/19/07
York is beautiful. A delightful mixture of the old and new. TONS to do and see and its easily done on foot. If you like history, you'll love York's layers of Roman, Viking and Norman history. Don't miss the Jorvik Viking Center, the York Castle Museum or the Museum Gardens. For the tacky yet fun part, hit the York Dungeon.

  • Great stop on London-to-Edinburgh trip
    By DavidW, 11/02/05
Visitors taking the train from London to Edinburgh should consider a stop-over in York--either for the day or, better yet, for several days. The center of the old medieval city is walking distance from the rail station. Super-convenient for rail travelers, the huge old (but modernized) Royal York Hotel is literally at the rail station.

  • Great town
    By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/25/05
York is a great destination in England. York Minster is the largest Cathedral I have ever seen, try the ghost tours, the outside city walls. Don't forget the Pubs in York, not only a great place to relax but great spot to grab a tasty meal at a reasonable rate! Too much to see Didn't have enough time.
