I agree with Mel-Bel to a certain degree. The island is of enormous historical significance and the foor there is fantastic, but the hawkers trying to hassle you constantly are not worth the bother. If they were not there then the visit would have been delightful but you are never left alone. We saw a football match of the locals with a tree in the middle of the pitch, it was brilliant.
I visited Goree Island with a group on a mission trip to Dakar. The boat ride over was gorgeous, as were the views from the island. We ate at a neat outdoor restaurant overlooking the water, wonderful food! We then took a walking tour of the island, and our guide Mustafa was very knowledgable. There is a lot of history on the island, and it was a great experience. A must see if you're the in the area.
