Great experience. Exciting and vibrant. Everything J'aime Carlson said is still true. Very alive and atmospheric. Panama Viejo is a World Heritage site. Great food. Slight sense of danger (unfounded). Nice people. It doesn't rain all day in the rainy season. It ia also fairly easy to visit the other many interesting regions in Panama outside the city.
Casco Viejo is a neighborhood where you will absorb history and culture just by wandering around. Every corner has something of historical significance that relates the construction of the Canal or the foundation of the Republic of Panama. The Old Panama section or Casco Viejo is being revamped or remodeled. Now there are new restaurants to enjoy. There are also great sites to see, including presidencial palace, and the gold chapel church (iglesias del altar del oro). There is also a beautiful view of the bay and new Panama City.
