This hotel has very friendly and helpful staff, When I did the on-line booking, I had some problems. So I called the hotel directly. They helped me out and I got a room I am really happy with. The hotel is older, but very clean and the price is good too. The location is very convenient. And yes, there are lots of homeless people around. But in ...

The Opal Hotel was listed as a two star hotel. This implies that I was not expecting much - and I was disappointed - even scared! The Opal may be a one star hotel - but it's close. Nothing about me screams "victim", but there were several times when I was afraid. Polk street seemed to be the gathering place for the homeless, drug ...

Horrible Customer Service
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/17/08
My experience at the Opal was awful. The location is great. The room was clean. But the staff was horrible! The guy checking us out did not know what he was doing and ended up charging our card way too much and the management would not return phone calls to reverse the charges. I had one employee hang up on me when I called. I still haven't seen the money that is supposed to be credited to my account. I will never stay there again.
"Upper Crust" quality at an affordable cost; our room was large and well appointed; located in the heart of the city on Van Ness; the service was excellent; the entire property was super clean; free plug-in internet worked fine.

Loved this hotel!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/27/07
We have no complaints about this hotel! Service is the best we have ever had. The front desk staff was extremely polite. Igor and Brad were enthusiastic in helping us with directions and recommendations for sight seeing and dinning in San Francisco. Even though this happened to be a pretty busy time for the hotel, the staff was helpful, ...

Horrible Experience

I booked my reservation one month in advance; when we arrived, he had the reservation but said it had been cancelled. He tried to blame it on us, had we cancelled it. I was very calm and asked why I would do that. He just stood there and said we are sold out I cannot help you, did not offer any additional assistance what so ever. I said you can ...

Wonderful Weekend
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 04/15/07
The Opal is a well maintained hotel, situated so that you can easily reach all San Francisco landmarks.
The staff made every attempt to make our stay a pleasure; they succeeded.
It was a rare find in that crazy city.
Warning: My experience with Cheap Tickets was a bust. Go directly through the hotel for reservations.
The good: The convinience, it's on Geary and Van Ness, about 5 minutes drive away from Japan Town so you can get good food there.
The bad: It's really close to the 'bad' section of downtown, be careful where you walk especially at night if you don't have a car or don't plan on renting one while you are there.
