I’ve been travelling the world off and on for a great many years. I can honestly say this is one of the best places i've ever stayed, in any country. It was like staying in a comfortable, clean home, with all the facilities you'd expect being in top condition. Has a good kitchen and the included breakfast has lots of variety to choose from. Good restaurants and bars are very close. The owner was exceptionally helpful too.

One may be fooled by reviews, but it wasn't the case at Gibela: I have never met anyone with more knowledge about everything a traveller wants to know in Durban and Kwazulunatal than host Elmar. I did not try to eat from the floor - but it would probably be possible. And even though you are in a big city you don't have the feeling you are - it's a very relaxed place. And for a night out, Florida Road is just around the corner...

I had the pleasure to stop at the Gibela Backpackers Lodge during my solo backpacking trip to South Africa, and I have to admit it was one of the best places I stayed at. Clean, quiet, friendly and perfectly located to grab a bite or catch a bus. I have already recommended it!

Gabela is very clean, and increadibly homey. Unlike other backpackers in the area that are more party oriented, Gabela is quiet and clean. The tone is set by the beautiful warm colors of its walls and tile floors and by decor that gives it character. The manager is very knowledgable and nice. Place is fun to chill in. Bad location of you want to get downtown. Awesome food in the morniing!

Upon arriving the owner sat us down and gave us a very useful (okay, essential, really) map of the place with the all important good restaurants marked out.. (We tried one and it was the best Italian I'd had in years!)
