Slow service and below average steak. Nice wine list and fun to people watch.

The very first thing I do after I book my flight to New York City, is make reservations at Balthazar Restaurant. I usually go twice, once for dinner and once for lunch/brunch. Wouldn't be a trip to NYC without the fine food and service at this wonderful establishment. My hats off to the proprietors - they have it right all 'round!

Service excellent, but very noisy. Tables crowded together. Onion goat cheese tart was delicious but a green salad was under dressed. Salmon and duck confit were good but not great. Dessert tarts were disappointing.

Also great for star spotting and that romantic meal. Tables are very cosy so makesure your neighbours are people you don't mind coming into contact with!

  • just a fantastic place

great, thoughtful service. the "bar steak" (a flank) was just better than all the other steaks in town (though maybe not a big fat monster, it was tasty. it made me think of the japanese guy who discovered umami by distilling huge quantitites of seaweed...for some reason). profiteroles were great too. and we saw Elvis Costello dining there

  • Great, but resting on its laurels....
    By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/17/05
Always the 'right' spot for a romantic dinner, but getting way to touristy and loud. The dinner crowd is strictly for those riding after the curve. The real selling point for locals is the excellent bar service. Sitting at the gorgeous zinc bar and ordering one of their superb wines-by-the-glass and a decadent hamburger is worth the noise ...

  • A must have!
    By Glennie, 10/03/05
I absolutely love eating at this restaurant. I enjoy a wonderful experience each time I order anything. The Lobster Risotto is incredible as well as the seafood ceviche. I enjoyed the duck as well as the bouillabaisse. I always need to have the pavlova for dessert. I would attempt to order a different dessert but I refuse to skip on this deliciously sweet perfection! It's a must have.

  • Lovely French bistro and raw bar
    By Tara, 09/26/05
A friend took us here while we were staying in town at the W Hotel on Lexington. Great, great, great! Still has the panache it became known for, and is one of my favorites in NY. Have the three-tier seafood appetizer, really good and really fun. Who knew conch and sea snails were so good?
