A bit over priced for the type of food served here. The food was somewhat bland, not very flavorful at all. It's a large space with "minimalist" decor, but doesn't really complete any sort of "package" for me. There's plenty of other places I'd rather give my money to for better food.

  • Republic of good noodles.
    By cameron marlow, 05/07/07
It is possible to have food that is both tasty and won't boost your HDL by 20 points.

It's no Momofuku but the noodle soups are good and their vegetarian options are pretty numerous.

The communist aesthetic, open seating and pan-asian menu is so reminiscent of Wagamama that I'd guess they're related.

It can be crowded and loud for dinner or on the weekend, but it's usually pretty easy to get a seat at lunch.

  • A Must For Lovers of Pan-Asian Cuisine
    By Anthony, 02/05/07
I've been to Republic at least 5 times, and I must say I'm hard-pressed to find a better meal deal in New York City. The food is divine, mainly the Coconut Shrimp appetizer and the Pad Thai...the atmosphere is quintessential New York (lofty spaces and minimalist decor)...and the service is very prompt and friendly. The only drawback is the ...

  • Great Place, but not for a date!
    By Miss Mel, 08/18/06
I make it a point to stop in Republic when I'm in Union Square. The service is prompt, the decor is cool and the food is delicious (most of all!). It's not too cozy if you're going for a romantic date in my opinion, especially when it's crowded. It's loud and boisterous. It is a great place to stop with friends. But if you want more romance, this is not the place.

  • hip, cool but crowded
    By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/10/06
food is good, service is just right, but avoid the dinner crowd. sharing tables can be a nuissance sometimes especially you share it with loud talkers....but if you like gossip, look no further, you can get too many soap opera in this restaurant. and if you can't beat them, don't speak to your friend, you SHOUT.

if you are undecided what to get, just look to your right (or left) and check out what the other people are eating.

  • Great Union Square choice
    By Diana, 09/14/05
The food is always good here, and the service is quick. My favorite is the Vietnamese crushed rice with Pork Chops.
The only downside is that you often have to share tables with strangers and that the noise level is quite high.
And if you don't order any alcoholic drinks, you can hardly find a better deal anywhere in NYC.
