Location Information
This is one of the last fire towers standing on its original location in the Nicolet National Forest. It was erected in 1934 and was one of a series of 20 towers that were built in the Forest during the 1930s. By the early 1970s, forest fire spotting was being done by airplane and almost all of the fire towers were dismantled. The Mountain Fire Lookout Tower was left standing because it was used as a Forest Service communication tower and a relay station for the Oconto County Sheriff's office. The visitor is able to climb to the top of the tower for a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside, just as towermen did in the past. Interpretive signs explain the fire detection methods and how networks of these towers were constructed.
