The land for Saugatuck Dunes State Park was acquired in 1971 from the Augustinian Order, who once used the buildings as a prison and a seminary. Encompassing nearly 900 acres along the Lake Michigan waterfront containing a coastal dune system that supports endangered plant species while permitting low-impact recreation.Saugatuck Dunes State Park is a day use park. The park's major attractions are the swimming beach and the 300-acre natural area. Nature enthusiasts, bird watchers, and hikers are the predominant day users. There are picnic tables, grills, and a shelter. Overnight camping is not offered. Winding throughout the park, Saugatuck Dunes has 13 miles of sandy hiking trails that are groomed and tracked during the snowy months affording cross-country skiing. Boaters and anglers can take advantage of the proximity of Lake Michigan's shoreline. The nearby Saugatuck community, nicknamed "The Art Coast of Michigan," has plenty of restaurants, shops, art galleries, motels, cottages, and bed-and-breakfasts.
Day use recreations center on beach activities including swimming and sunbathing, miles of hiking and cross-country trails, picnicking and shoreline fishing.
West Coast Michigan experiences pleasant summers with temperatures averaging 70 degrees F (21 degrees C). In winter, temperatures plunge to 22 degrees F (-6 degrees C). Lake winds have dramatic affect on wind chill factors. Yearly precipitation averages 40 inches and above.
