Located half a mile off Interstate 96, this southeast Michigan recreation area rests along the shores of Huron River. The park is a mixture of open brush land to mature hardwood forest, with some pockets of open meadows. Island Lake, Briggs Lake, Spring Mill Pond, Huron River and Spring Mill Creek add to the habitat diversity making this one of southeast Michigan's most favored stopovers for migratory waterfowl. Bird life is just one of the natural wonders making a splash at Island Lake Recreation Area. Each spring wildflowers burst anxiously from the forest floor, riverbeds, lake shorelines, and sun-drenched meadows. In fall, waves of vibrant reds and oranges roll across the parkland.Island Lake Recreation Area offers an "up north" experience without leaving southeast Michigan. Beaches, cabins, trails, fishing areas and hunting grounds are a few of the year-round attractions. The park also has an organization camp. A canoe livery provides leisurely trips down miles of the scenic Huron River, where canoe campsites are accessible only by river. Island Lake is open to hunting for all species between September 15 and March 31. Early goose season is permitted starting September 1. State hunting regulations apply. This park boasts excellent deer and rabbit hunting, while great hunting opportunities exist for woodcock, pheasant, duck, goose, and squirrel as well. The park is also open to trapping.
Island Lake Recreation Area offers 45 campsites, cabin lodging, swimming, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, hiking, and boating.
Southeast Michigan is the warmest region in the state with summer temperatures averaging 70 degrees F (above 21 degrees C) but it is not infrequent for days to reach the high 80s. Winter temperatures are warmer as well with averages hovering just below freezing. Yearly moisture amounts range between 18 - 32 inches.
