I never would have been president if it had not been for my experiences in North Dakota, Theodore Roosevelt once remarked when reflecting on the influences that affected his life and career. Remembered as a great conservationist, among many other things, Teddy Roosevelt did more than any other U.S. president for the protection and preservation of America's wild lands. It's here in the badlands of North Dakota that T. R.'s conservation ethic was forged, and it's here in this rugged, inhospitable landscape that the memory of the old Rough Rider is fittingly commemorated. Less than a half-million visitors trek to this off-the-beaten-track park each year, which makes it easy to find solitude and get lost in this unique landscape. Hiking and horseback trails invite the visitor to explore the land much as Roosevelt did when he first visited in 1883. From wild horses to prairie dogs to badlands wildflowers, an incredible array of plant and animal life await the curious visitor.
