Short attention span sufferers, Ashley National Forest may be the place for you. This vast forest to the east of Salt Lake City -- it encompasses Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area as well as highly regarded High Uintas Wilderness -- hosts every outdoor activity under the hot Western sun. Your risk of boredom is nil.

Tucked away in the northeast corner of the forest, Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area offers some of the best fishing in the West, well over 100 miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails, and hundreds of camp and picnic sites. It is also a boater's paradise: Out on the lakes and the Green River you'll see everything from kayaks and canoes to personal watercraft, ski and fishing boats, pontoons, and gigantic houseboats complete with all the comforts of home (including the kitchen sink).

Or bring your hiking boots and venture into the wild and unspoiled High Uintas Wilderness Area. The Uintas is refuge for bighorn sheep, elk, moose, mule deer, eagles, osprey, owls, and beaver - probably some of the best wildlife viewing in the region. Tiny towns and lonely highways surround the preserve, making it accessible for hikers, campers, and anglers who come to enjoy this region's beauty.
