While many know that south-central New Mexico's Lincoln National Forest is the home of Smokey Bear, few are familiar with the diversity that Smokey's home has to offer. The Lincoln's 1.1 million acres are replete with stark contrasts: elevations run from 4,000 to 11,500 feet; habitat ranges from bleached, barren desert to cool sub-alpine forests are located within Lincoln's boundaries. Drive in on a low-elevation road and you'll be hot in shorts and a T-shirt; climb the winding roads to Cloudcroft, at 9,000 feet, and you'll want a jacket, pants, and hat.

Once roamed by the Apache Indians, gold rushers, and Billy the Kid, Lincoln National Forest features the White Mountain and Capitan Mountain wilderness areas, hundreds of miles of scenic trails, all sorts of snow sports, family campgrounds, rock climbing and caving, copious wildlife, and much more.
