The Toiyabe scatters its prairies, granite canyons and snowcapped mountain peaks across from the eastern part of California to the central regions of Nevada. The scenery, topography, climate, and wildlife varies widely - some of its ranger districts are separated by as much as 500 miles. You'll find foothills covered by juniper, sagebrush and joshua trees to its rugged, subalpine rocky ranges. As the largest forest outside of Alaska, the Toiyabe covers around 4 million acres. The former Las Vegas Ranger District was changed to the Spring Mountain National Recreation Area in the early 1990s. The Toiyabe includes over 1,100 miles of hiking, backpacking, and horseback riding trails, as well as 1,600 miles of recreational roads for scenic driving and travel.
