Location Information
The North Country Trail (NCT) is a National Scenic Trail which when completed will extend across seven states from New York to North Dakota. Today, 1,700 of the 4,000-mile route are completed.

On the Huron-Manistee National Forest, the trail passes through a wide variety of vegetation types. Blue diamond blazes designate the NCT, as well as posts with NCT stickers at road crossings. Topography varies from flat to rolling hills. As a result of good planning, this segment of trail feels more remote than in actuality. Much of this 23.4-mile stretch encompasses beginner to intermediate terrain. Mountain bikes are prohibited between the Bowman Lake Trailhead and the Nichols Lake North Trailhead. From Nichols Lake North Trailhead south to M-20 Trailhead, bikers are welcome. The biking stretch is nearly 20 miles long.

Camping is permitted 200 feet off the trail. This is a carry-in / carry-out trail. Developed campgrounds along this segment include Nichols Lake, Benton Lake, and Highbank Lake. All three campgrounds offer potable water.

Note: A vehicle pass is required from April 1 to November 1. Passes may be purchased for $30 (household), $20 (annual), $5 (weekly), or $3 (daily). Golden Age Passport and Access holders may purchase annual passes for 50% of the regular price.
