Location Information
The Au Sable River is a major tributary to Lake Huron. It drains an area that is partially within the Huron National Forest. The Au Sable passes through the counties of Otsego, Crawford, Oscoda, Alcona, Roscommon, and Iosco. A 23-mile segment from Mio to 4001 Bridge is designated as a National Scenic River. Most of the Au Sable is wide and deep for easy canoeing, although the current is fairly swift (2-4 mph). Water levels near dam sites may fluctuate, creating hazardous waters so canoeists need to be cautious. The lowland swamp areas along the river are an attraction to deer, beaver, and other wildlife. The Au Sable offers excellent opportunities for fishing, as it is the home for trout, steelhead, walleye, northern pike, and others. Salmon can be caught below Foote Dam. In the stretch referred to as the "Holy Water," catch-and-release regulations apply. This stretch is located between Burton's Land and Wakeley Bridge. The stretch from Mio power line to McKinley, only artificials and flies are permitted and a 2 trout per day rule applies. Size limits apply as well -- brown trout must be 15" long and rainbow and brook trout must be at least 12". This limestone river, with its native trout population carries many regulations. It is best to contact the National Forest or MDNR before venturing out.

There are no fees for use by watercraft. Camping on National Forest lands along the shoreline from 4001 Bridge to below Foote Dam is limited to designated and signed sites only. A campsite fee of $5 per night and a $2 reservation fee are required from May 15 to September 30. Reservation forms and campsite maps may be obtained by calling 989-362-8961.

There are countless access points. Wildernet directions include only National Forest sites.
