Location Information
The Manistee River is a designated Wild and Scenic River. Between Hodenpyl and Tippy Dams, it is characterized by steep banks and sharp bends. This segment offers good walleye and pike fishing. Novice canoeists and people who like to float wide, swift moving streams will enjoy this segment. Lower banks, a wider stream channel, and slow, wide bends characterize the river below Tippy Dam. It has an excellent steelhead and salmon fishery with the season extending the entire year. The lower section is ideal for the novice canoeist and people who like to float wide, slow-moving streams. However, whether canoeing in the section above or below Tippy Dam, use caution to avoid the numerous logs and stumps tin the river. Camping is available at Seaton Creek Campground.Wildlife viewing is prime along the river. Right outside of Mesick at the waterfowl sanctuary, flocks of ducks and geese congregate. Between Hodenpyl Dam and Coates Highway, keep an eye out for bald eagles and osprey. (Ospreys have crooks in their wings.) The stretch between Tippy Dam and Lake Michigan is a good location for catching glimpses of white-tailed deer, raccoons, or otters. Float Times (In Hours): Hodenpyl Dam to Red Bridge, 4.0 Red Bridge to Tippy Dam, 3.5 Tippy Dam to High Bridge, 2.0 High Bridge, to Bear Creek, 3.0 Bear Creek to Rainbow Bend, 1.5 Rainbow Bend to M-55 Bridge, 4.0
