Location Information

The Bay Furnace Campground and Picnic Area is located in Alger County along the south shore of Lake Superior. This scenic area has spectacular sunrises, sunsets, and occasional views of the Northern Lights. This overnight destination is a wonderful place to use as a home base. Nearby are the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Alger Underwater Preserve, Miner's Castle, boat cruises, and many delightful waterfalls.

A bit of history: In 1869, the iron-smelting town of Onota occupied this picturesque site. For almost 8 years the town prospered and developed into a community of about 500 people. In 1877, a fire destroyed the town leaving only iron kiln ruins to be seen today.

Bay Furnace offers a wonderful campground and picnic area that overlook Lake Superior. In fact, this campground serves as a campsite for divers exploring the shipwrecks of the Alger Underwater Preserve. The campground has 50 sites, each with a fireplace and table. Toilets and drinking water are conveniently located throughout the campground. A sanitary dumping station and pressurized drinking water are available for self-contained vehicles.

The picnic area has tables, grills, drinking water, toilets, and a sandy beach. Fishing for lake trout and coho salmon is very good in Lake Superior. Boat ramps are available at Munising and Au Train Bays.

Camp supplies, food, and fishing supplies can be found near the campground. Firewood is available from a concessionaire who travels through the campground. Bay Furnace Campground is a fee area, first-come, first-served. Golden Age and Golden Access Passport are accepted.
