Location Information
The Lake Michigan Campground is located approximately 18 miles west of St. Ignace, between US 2 an the Lake Michigan shoreline. Dunes, waves, sand, and wind, are the primary environmental factors present. The view of the lake is spectacular. Water birds in the area are fun to watch. In the early morning, watch the lake for ducks, such as common merganser and the hooded merganser. Shore birds, such as the spotted sandpiper go running up and down the beach. There are 35 campsites, cold running water, and some flush toilets as well as vault toilets. Many sites are excellent tents sites located between dunes 20 to 30 feet high. Other sites are suitable for trailers and other recreational vehicles. Two spaces are available for the handicapped visitor. When the wind is in the south or southwest, large waves crash onto the sandy shores. Riding these waves can be exciting and a lot of fun for all, but remember there can be a dangerous undertow. Swimming is at your own risk. Fishing is enjoyed at the 4,233-acre Brevoort Lake. Boat access is available at the Brevoort Lake Campground. The lake has excellent populations of walleye, smallmouth bass, crappie, sunfish, perch, northern pike, and muskellunge. The Sand Dunes Cross-country Ski Trail is an excellent system of trail loops for hiking in summer. Access to the North Country Trail is nearby. The St. Ignace area offers much in the way of recreation. The ferry services to historic Mackinac Island, the Michilimackinac Museum, Father Marquette Memorial Park, the public library, shopping, golfing, restaurants, and much more are within a short drive.
