Location Information
TRAILHEAD LOCATION: Off Sunlight Basin Road, west of the Dead Indian campground.GENERAL INFORMATION: The main Elk Creek trail traverses several slopes before ascending a ridge. The route then rides the ridge tops over some precarious rocky ledges. At the junction of Elk Creek and Elkhorn trails the Elk Creek Trail abruptly descends the slope to the east in the trees with the Elkhorn trail continuing south along the ridge. At the Elk Creek-Dead Indian Meadows trail junction the Elk Creek Trail abruptly switch backs up a slope and is indicated by a blaze and arrow on a tree. At the top of the wooded ridge the trail climbs gradually and traverses several meadows. The trail crosses into the wilderness and begins the descent to Dead Indian Meadows. A magnificent view is offered here as the trail switches down a long hill, winding in and out of aspen groves to Dead Indian Meadows.
