Location Information
The 56 miles of the Mulberry River on the Ozark National Forest are designated Recreational and Scenic. The river is located in northwestern Arkansas in Newton, Johnson and Franklin Counties on the Pleasant Hill and Boston Mountain Ranger Districts. Highlighted recreation activities are canoeing, camping, fishing and swimming. East of Arkansas 23, County Road 1003 follows a scenic portion of the Mulberry. Much of this road has already been paved. When completed, this paved, winding country road will provide a leisurely drive with many river and wildlife viewing opportunities.

Class II /III rapids are the norm on this river. When the water is high, the Mulberry becomes extremely dangerous because of the willow strainers, and floating is not recommended. The Mulberry is very scenic with boulders and bluffs along the float. Wolf Pen Recreation Area, southwest of the Oark community, is the first major canoe launch. The final take-out location is given at Highway 215, but floating is good all the way to Interstate 40. Major canoe launch sites on National Forest lands are at Wolf Pen, Highbank, Redding, and Campbell Cemetery. Access points on private land open to the public are at Byrd's Canoe Rental (Beech Grove) and Turner Bend Canoe Rental (Highway 23 and Mulberry River).

The section of the Mulberry River on Pleasant Hill Ranger District is easiest accessed at your choice of Redding, Wolf Pen or Ozone campgrounds. With fishing choices running the gamut of Smallmouth Bass, Spotted Bass, Shadow Bass, Green Sunfish and Channel Catfish, you shouldn't have a problem finding something to satisfy you. This river is classified as a Wild and Scenic River and is also canoe accessible.
