Location Information
This self-guiding, paved trail meanders through a shaded, jungle-like hammock of gumbo-limbo trees (Bursera simaruba), royal palms (Roystonea elata), ferns, and air plants. Also, you see native orchids and long trailing woody vines reminding you of a lush Caribbean environment. This beautiful hammock is rather dense at times, inviting a profusion of swarming insects. Bug spray is advisable. An interesting note about this paved, wheelchair accessible route is that you'll see remnant destruction done by Hurricane Andrew, which nearly obliterated Homestead, Florida from the face of the earth. Look for the sideways surviving gumbo-limbo trees that have sent out new roots. These tropical trees tend to be indestructible.
