From Brookings, Travel northeast on County Road 784 (North Bank) to Forest Service Road 1376. Follow 1376 northeast to Forest Service Road 1909 east and the trailhead for the Vulcan Lake Trail #1110A at road's end (32 miles from Brookings). Follow this trail to Vulcan lake where the Gardner Mine Loop Trail can be accessed. In addition, hikers can travel on the Johnson Butte Trail #1110 to the Gardner Mine Trail #1121 which then accessed this loop.
Location Information
The Gardner Mine Loop Trail provides a different return route to the Vulcan Lake Trailhead or the opportunity to travel on either the Johnson Butte Trail or Gardner Mine Trail from Vulcan Lake. Camping and water are available at Sorvaag Bog. In addition, exploration of the old Gardner Chrome Mine site is possible on the return. Rock cairns mark the way on this rocky peridotite/serpentine trail.
