Directions
From Brookings, Travel northeast on County Road 784 (North Bank) to Forest Service Road 1376. Follow 1376 northeast to Forest Service Road 1909 east and to the trailhead for Johnson Butte Trail #1110 at road's end (32 miles from Brookings). Follow this trail for 0.7 miles to the Gardner Mine Trail.
Location Information
The Gardner Mine Trail travels along a moderate grade old mining road through rugged serpentine rock country and offers a glimpse into the history of old chrome mining operations at Gardner and Rosie mines. There are adequate campsites and water available along the trail. A detour via the Gardner Mine Loop Trail offers a shortcut over to Vulcan Lake.
