Location Information
The Johnson Butte Trail is a ridge line trail that offers access to Salamander and Valen Lakes within the Kalmiopsis Wilderness. Although lakes are small and have no fish, they are interesting ecologically. Combined with the Upper Chetco Trail at Johnson Butte, a loop hike can be made. Water and camp sites are adequate and views of the surrounding area are quite good. Elevation is fairly constant near 3,600 ft and the months of May and June offer the best opportunity to see the Kalmiopsis plants in bloom.

Facilities at the trailhead include a bulletin board, registration, parking, picnic tables, a toilet and trash collection.
